How to sanitise Golden Goose sneakers without damaging them

Golden Goose sneakers are recognised for their lived-in finish, but that does not mean they should be treated like ordinary washable trainers. Leather panels, suede overlays, glitter details, technical fabric and rubber soles each respond differently to moisture, friction and cleaning products. A careful sanitising routine can freshen the inside and outside while preserving the intentional vintage appearance.

Australian conditions make regular care especially useful. Damp winters in Melbourne, dusty streets in Perth, sudden showers in Sydney and long, warm days in Brisbane can all leave footwear carrying moisture, grit and odour. The safest approach is gentle surface cleaning, controlled drying and targeted deodorising rather than soaking the entire shoe.

Check the materials before cleaning

Begin by removing the laces and checking the upper, tongue, heel tab and sole edge. Golden Goose styles such as Superstar, Francy, Mid Star, Haus Halley, Starter, Running and Slide may combine smooth leather with suede, metallic finishes, glitter or mesh. A product that is suitable for leather can stain suede or dull a decorative coating.

Brush away dry dust with a soft shoe brush or clean toothbrush. Do this outdoors or over a sheet of paper so grit does not get pushed deeper into the fibres. Read the care label if available, and test any cleaner on a hidden section before treating a visible panel.

Avoid placing the shoes in a washing machine, even when the soles look sturdy. The agitation can distort the shape, loosen glued sections and spread colour from darker leather or fabric onto lighter panels.

Prepare a gentle sanitising solution

For most uppers, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild, colourless liquid soap. A fragrance-free laundry liquid or gentle dishwashing soap is preferable to strong bleach, alcohol-heavy sprays or household disinfectants. Mix enough solution to dampen a cloth, not enough to flood the shoe.

Sanitising the inside requires restraint. Remove the insoles if they are designed to come out, wipe them separately with a lightly damp cloth and allow them to dry fully. For the lining, use a barely damp microfibre cloth and focus on areas that contact the foot. Never pour disinfectant directly inside, as liquid can remain trapped around the toe box and create a new odour.

A diluted white vinegar solution may help with mild smells, but it should be used sparingly and patch-tested first. It is not suitable for every finish, and its sharp scent can linger in enclosed footwear.

Clean leather, suede and decorative details

Smooth leather can usually be wiped with a damp cloth using small, gentle movements. Follow with a second cloth lightly moistened with clean water to remove soap residue. Do not scrub aggressively around printed stars, painted marks or distressed areas, since these details are part of the design.

Suede needs a dry-first method. Lift surface dirt with a suede brush, then use a dedicated suede eraser for small marks. If damp cleaning is unavoidable, apply minimal moisture to the cloth rather than the shoe and work evenly across the entire panel to prevent water rings. Once dry, brush the nap back into place.

Glitter, metallic leather and embellishments should be treated as fragile surfaces. Dab rather than rub, and keep liquid away from loose threads, glued decorations and reflective coatings. For trainers likely to encounter wet pavements, reviewing these rain-ready styles can help when choosing a more practical pair for everyday Australian weather.

Refresh rubber soles and fabric sections

Rubber soles often collect dark marks from footpaths, car parks and public transport floors. Use a soft brush or white non-abrasive cleaning sponge with the mild soap solution. Work around the edge of the sole rather than dragging dirt across the upper. A cotton bud can reach the narrow groove between the rubber and leather.

Technical fabric and mesh should be cleaned with a soft cloth or very soft toothbrush. Pat rather than saturate these areas, particularly around padded collars and stitched joins. Excess water may affect internal foam or remain beneath overlays.

For white rubber, avoid harsh scouring powders and strong solvents. They can leave a chalky surface, weaken the finish or transfer residue onto the upper. A few gentle passes are safer than trying to remove every mark in one session.

Dry and deodorise them properly

After cleaning, stuff each shoe with plain white paper or an unprinted towel to help it hold its shape. Leave the pair in a cool, ventilated room away from direct sun, heaters and hairdryers. In Australian summer, a shaded spot with airflow is safer than a hot balcony, where leather can dry too quickly and crack.

Allow the shoes to dry completely before wearing them or replacing the insoles. This may take 24 hours, especially after humid weather in Cairns or a rainy day in Hobart. Rotate between pairs when possible so sweat has time to evaporate naturally.

For odour control, sprinkle a small amount of bicarbonate of soda inside a removable fabric pouch or sock and leave it overnight. Do not pour loose powder into delicate linings, since it may collect in seams. Cedar shoe inserts are another practical option and can help absorb moisture between wears.

Maintain the finish between deeper cleans

Prevention reduces the need for intensive treatment. After wearing the sneakers, remove visible grit, loosen the laces and let them air before placing them in a cupboard. In dusty areas such as Adelaide or Perth, a quick brush after each outing prevents particles from working into suede and stitching.

Use a suitable leather conditioner only on smooth leather, and keep it away from suede, glitter, mesh and painted sections. A water-repellent protector can be useful, but select one labelled for the exact material and test it first. Apply sprays outdoors, allow proper ventilation and never assume a protector is safe for every panel.

If you are comparing outlet styles or browsing collections such as the California selection, check the listed materials before planning your care routine. A low-maintenance leather-and-rubber design may suit daily commuting, while glitter or suede details call for more cautious handling.

Sneaker material Safe first step Avoid Drying advice
Smooth leather Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soap Soaking, bleach and strong solvents Air-dry in shade and condition when fully dry
Suede Use a suede brush and eraser Heavy water, vigorous scrubbing and wax Restore the nap with a brush after drying
Glitter or metallic finish Dab carefully with a nearly dry cloth Rubbing, alcohol sprays and abrasive sponges Keep away from heat and direct sunlight
Technical fabric or mesh Pat with diluted mild soap Flooding seams and stiff brushes Stuff lightly and allow extended airflow
Rubber sole Brush with mild soapy water Scouring powders and solvent cleaners Wipe clean and let the sole air-dry

Keep a soft brush, microfibre cloth, suede eraser and gentle soap together as a small sneaker-care kit. With regular light maintenance, careful sanitising and material-specific cleaning, Golden Goose sneakers can stay comfortable, fresh and visually distinctive through Australian commutes, weekend outings and unpredictable weather. Explore the available styles and choose a pair that matches both your wardrobe and the level of care you are prepared to provide.
